JoJo Siwa Shares What Dancing as the First Same-Sex ‘DWTS’ Couple Really Means
Reading Time: 3 minutes
Today is a busy day for Dancing With the Stars runner up JoJo Siwa. First, she was on Good Morning America for the DWTS full cast after party, then she went on to The View with her mom to talk about Siwa’s Dance Pop Revolution and everything Dancing With the Stars.
JoJo Siwa Announced as Dancing With The Stars Runner Up
Last night, Iman Shumpert was announced as the season 30 winner of DWTS. Even though JoJo and Jenna had been hitting high scores for many weeks, they earned runner up in the competition once the fan votes were added to the scores. Shumpert is now the first NBA player to win the show. Since the announcement, JoJo has shared emotional Instagram stories about ending the series.
“I will tell you I have cried four times today because it’s over, it was the best experience of my life I’m lucky because I have a lot of good that I get to take away from it. We-we had the best time together every single day in rehearsals,” said JoJo.
JoJo and Jenna made DWTS history as the first same-sex couple to ever compete on the show. This team surpassed expectations and made it all the way to the end of the competition.
JoJo is often seen as a role model since her fans are mostly young children. This popstar announced that she is apart of the LGBTQ+ community last January and has really thrived ever since. JoJo dancing with someone of the same sex was monumental on this series.
“Being the first same-sex couple meant that we were changing the way that the world looked at something normally. I think it’s important, right now, I think representation is huge,” said JoJo. “I think that for kids seeing me love who I want to love and dance with who I want to dance with makes them feel okay to love who they want to love.”
When asked about the series, JoJo’s mother Jessalynn noted that this was the best two and a half months of both her and her daughter’s life. Throughout the show, she was supportive of her daughter’s aspirations. Many fans have told JoJo that they wish they had someone like her when they were growing up, the popstar is happy she can be that person for kids today.
JoJo and Jessalynn Siwa Are on the Hunt for the Next Popstar Girl Group
Outside of DWTS, the Siwas have been creating a competition show of their own, Siwa’s Dance Pop Revolution. Within this show, JoJo and Jessalynn are looking for members of America’s next popstar girl group.
“I think we had so much fun doing it together when Jojo was young and we were like lets do it again with more kids and more moms and brace for the crazy and brace for the fun, wow it was incredible,” said Jessalynn.
JoJo has had a slew of success after her Dance Moms career. She has gone on to be one of the biggest young popstars that Nickelodeon has ever seen. Since JoJo didn’t have a real guide as to how fame would work, she and her mom are working to create the group to mentor young stars.
The promotional trailer for this series features a narrative similar to Dance Moms and Toddlers and Tiaras. Be prepared for drama, dance numbers, and plenty of singing!
“It’s wild it’s such a fun show the drama is crazy, but the kids are so beyond talented,” said JoJo. “I got to choreograph the all numbers on the show. Truthfully it’s the first time I’ve gotten to choreograph anything that’s not for myself and getting to create a four minute number for 11 new kids is a very big challenge but every single dance was so rewarding and the girl group is so amazing.”
Siwa’s Dance Pop Revolution is a Peacock original series, new episodes are available on the streaming platform on Tuesdays. Don’t have Peacock? The first few episodes of this show will be aired on E!
