The Battles continued on Tuesday’s new episode of The Voice Season 22 and fans are divided about the outcome of one matchup on John Legend’s team. Did Legend make the right decision in keeping Valarie Harding on his team instead of Dia Malai?

John Legend Chooses Valarie Harding in The Voice Battle

For their Battle on Tuesday night, Valarie and Dia performed “Bust Your Windows” by Jazmine Sullivan, who also happened to be Legend’s Battle Advisor for this season. Both singers gave their all to the performance, which had coach Blake Shelton joking that they scared him.

The coaches had positive things to say about both artists, but they seemed to slightly prefer Dia, with Shelton saying she had the “overall more consistent performance.” Camila Cabello said she would choose Dia, and Gwen Stefani said Dia “stole my heart in this performance.”

Legend did praise Dia for performing “in character,” and he also complimented her “dope outfit.” However, he told Valarie that her “voice has so much electricity and power to it.” He ultimately chose to keep Valarie on his team. Because he didn’t save Dia, and none of the other coaches stole her, she was eliminated.

“I do believe that Dia was a little bit better at being in character,” Legend admitted after making his decision. “But I feel like this is The Voice, and I still have to honor the better vocalist when I think about who’s going to advance on my team. And I feel like Valarie has persistently been a better vocalist than Dia.”

Fans Share Their Thoughts on Legend’s Choice

Fans were divided over which of the two artists should have moved on. Several fans tweeted their belief that Dia should have won the Battle. On the flipside, others agreed with Legend that Valarie gave the better vocal performance.

One Twitter user pointed out that style shouldn’t win out over vocal ability, writing that it’s “easier to dress someone up like a star than to get them to sound like one.” Another user agreed, writing, “This show is called The Voice not The Look.”

Fans in the YouTube comments were similarly split. At least one commenter was shocked that none of the other coaches wanted Dia on their team. As they wrote, “literally cannot believe Dia wasn’t stolen like that’s insane.”

Another user summed up the situation by writing, “WOW, Valarie opened up and delivered some great runs but excellent control from Dia! Experience won here.”

It was his call. I don’t think either one would go very far
