‘DWTS’ Recap: A Big Fall in the Ballroom?
Reading Time: 5 minutes
This week was all about the magic of Disney on Dancing With the Stars, and we saw some of the highest scores of the season to date!
The magic of Disney on ‘DWTS’
After an amazing opening number in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland California, it was time for the competitive routines. But the opener wasn’t our only taste of the Happiest Place on Earth, since we also got to see every team explore the parks in their pre-performance video packages!
The Dances on ‘DWTS’
Sailor and Val
After meeting Cinderella herself at Disneyland, Sailor and Val danced a Vinnese Waltz to “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes”. Sailor has developed a lot of Grace as a dancer and the judges thought it was a well-executed performance.
Carrie Ann: 8
Len: 8
Bruno: 8
Total Score: 24/30
Karamo and Jenna
Karamo got to take his kids to Disneyland this week as he prepared to samba to “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” from The Lion King. While his footwork has been improving, it still needs some refinement and his arms were all over the place.
Carrie Ann: 7
Len: 7
Bruno: 7
Total Score: 21/30
Kate and Pasha
Kate got to be Mary Poppins for her jazz routine to “A Spoonful of Sugar”. Jazz choreography on DWTS tends to be all-over-the-place and lacking jazz content, but this one was fantastic and Kate did a great job with it. But the biggest surprise came after the dance, when Carrie Ann’s chair slipped away from her and she fell to the floor!
Carrie Ann: 8
Len: 8
Bruno: 8
Total Score: 24/30
Sean and Lindsay
Sean and Lindsay danced to “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” from the Toy Story movies. Their quickstep was well-choreographed and Sean’s timing has improved, but his footwork was still messy and his movement in general quite stiff. But the judges gushed over his improvement from the beginning of the competition regardless.
Carrie Ann: 7
Len: 6
Bruno: 6
Total Score: 20/30
Ally and Sasha
Contemporary was a weird style to be assigned with the song “Beauty and the Beast”, and even moreso with the long dress Ally was wearing, but she managed to work through it and deliver a very strong performance. So strong, in fact, that she ended up receiving the very first “9” paddles of the season from the judges!
Carrie Ann: 9
Len: 9
Bruno: 9
Total Score: 27/30
Lauren and Gleb
Samba is probably the toughest dance style in the DWTS syllabus, so it was completely understandable for Lauren to be nervous, but her hesitancy came out a bit too much in this performance. She kind of threw her arms away and even froze on the spot for a few counts. But she still seemed to be happy with her scores, and even moreso with the fact that she got to dance to “Under The Sea” and portray her favorite Disney Princess, Ariel!
Carrie Ann: 8
Len: 7
Bruno: 8
Total Score: 23/30
Kel and Witney
Like we said earlier, jazz routines on DWTS tend to consist of a mishmash of steps that aren’t really “jazz” but also don’t belong in any of the other style options. Putting that aside, Kel did a fantastic job with performing this routine and it’s been really nice seeing him improve over the past couple of weeks!
Carrie Ann: 9
Len: 8
Bruno: 9
Total Score: 26/30
Hannah and Alan
Hannah and Alan danced a foxtrot to Zayn Malik and Zhavia‘s version of “A Whole New World”. She had what was probably the best technique of the night, but Len was not happy with what he considered to be a lack of steps in hold, so he was pretty harsh on them for this performance.
Carrie Ann: 9
Len: 7
Bruno: 9
Total Score: 25/30
James and Emma
After goofing around as pirates in Disneyland, James and Emma Paso Doble’d to the theme from Pirates of the Carribean. James did a great job at selling the character at executing the technique of the dance.
Carrie Ann: 9
Len: 8
Bruno: 9
Total Score: 26/30
Elimination Time On ‘DWTS’
They used to eliminate people on Disney night, but I guess not anymore. Much like last season, Tom announced at the end of the show no one would be eliminated, meaning this week’s judges’s scores and viewer votes would roll over to be combined with next week’s to determine the Week 6 elimination!
