According to CNN, the crash occurred on the morning of Wednesday, March 15, in Malibu. Officers were reportedly called to the scene, where they found a silver Lexus which had collided with a gate.
A spokesperson for the Malibu Police Department told the outlet that Van Dyke had sustained “minor injuries” in the accident. Meanwhile, TMZ reports that Van Dyke told police his car had slid, and he lost control. The outlet points out that Los Angeles has been getting a lot of rain recently.
TMZ further reports that Van Dyke was bleeding from the nose and mouth and might have suffered a concussion. Paramedics treated him at the scene of the accident, but he apparently didn’t want to go to the hospital. Someone reportedly came to pick him up.
Sources say drugs and alcohol were not involved, although police have reportedly submitted paperwork to the DMV requesting that Van Dyke retake his driving test.
During last month’s Season 9 premiere of The Masked Singer, Van Dyke appeared as Gnome. The panelists were emotional over his unmasking, as none of them had guessed he was under the mask. Nicole Scherzinger was in tears over the reveal.
At 97, Van Dyke is the oldest contestant to be unmasked on The Masked Singer so far. For his performance, he sang “When You’re Smiling” by Billie Holiday. After his unmasking, he sang “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from Mary Poppins.
Van Dyke later said he knew the panel wouldn’t figure out it was him under the mask. He also said he was “flattered” by the guess that he could be legendary singer Tony Bennett.
