Unmasked Too Soon? ‘The Masked Singer’ Contestants Who Should Have Lasted Longer

The Masked Singer is a ratings juggernaut for Fox. Now on Season 6, the energetic competition show is becoming a main staple among a bevy of competition shows. When the show first premiered in 2019, many were skeptical as to how successful a show with outlandish costumes would perform. With the show being another platform for some of our favorite celebs from the past to reemerge, The Masked Singer has created its own lane.

A show with growing success will always be one to critique and one of the biggest topics to debate after the show is why talented singers are unmasked early in the season. Here’s a list of the stars who deserved to keep the mask on for a little while longer.

Toni Braxton (The PufferFish)

The Masked Singer host Nick Cannon called the elimination of The Pufferfish “the biggest upset” in the show’s history. Viewers and the judges were all stunned at the early unmasking of Grammy award winning singer Toni Braxton during Season 6.

The legend, who performed Dua Lipa’s hit song “Levitating,” had to wear a double mask for her performances because of her health issues and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Let’s be honest, Braxton should never be eliminated from a singing competition. “Unbreak My Heart” indeed.

JoJo (The Blackswan)

Even though she made it to the Season 5 finale, JoJo should have won the competition altogether. Through all the gimmicks and fun, The Masked Singer is still a singing competition and JoJo can sing like no other. A star of her caliber should have taken home the championship, especially after singing Michael Bolton’s “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You.”

Tamera Mowry Housley (Seashell)

When Seashell first began singing Roxette’s “Listen To Your Heart,” the judges were all amazed at the soft voice coming from a nervous contestant. Before the song was over judge Jenny Mccarthy shouted out “She can sing.”

When it was finally revealed that Sister Sister actress Tamera Mowry Housley was under the mask, to say the judges were shocked is an understatement. For fans of the 90s teen queen, we all knew Mowry Housley had a voice that she never blessed us with musically. The progression she showed week after week should have at least earned her a trip to the Season 5 finale.

Hanson (The Russian Dolls)

Watching The Russian Dolls confuse the judges during Season 5 was so fun to see. The harmony and vocals that came from pop brother group, Hanson, was seriously amazing to listen to.

“How many voices are there?” Rita Wilson asked while guest judging. Hanson showcased their range and, because they have been out of the limelight for a while, viewers could not guess that the “MMMBOP” trio were behind the masks. The brothers did make it far in Season 5, but we would have liked to see a finally with Hanson’s The Russian Doll and JoJo’s Black Swan.

Chaka Khan (Miss Monster)

There’s a lot that can be said about a 10 time Grammy award winning singer who has influenced generations being eliminated in the third episode of Season 3. Chaka Khan’s unmasking was just as shocking as the legendary singer actually appearing on the show in the first place. Needless to say, this queen deserved to win.
