‘The Voice’ Adds New Mic Drop Button This Season — How Does It Work?

Niall Horan and Snoop Dogg on 'The Voice' Battle Rounds 2025

This season on The Voice, a new feature has been added to the Knockouts round called the “Mic Drop” button. This allows the coaches to choose one artist on their team who delivered an exceptional performance. One of the four Mic Drop recipients will receive a special honor.

What Is the Mic Drop Button on The Voice?

During Season 28 Knockouts on The Voice, the coaches don’t have any steals or saves to use. Instead, they’re able to press the Mic Drop button for an artist that blows them away with their performance. So far this season, two artists have received the honor.

Last week, coach Michael Bublé hit the button for his artist Max Chambers, who won a Knockout against Max Cooper III with a performance of “Don’t You Worry ’bout a Thing” by Stevie Wonder. Then during the most recent episode of the show, Niall Horan pressed it for the trio DEK of Hearts, who won their Knockout against Kayleigh Clark with a cover of “What If I Never Get Over You” by Lady A.

Two more artists will receive the Mic Drop honor as the Knockouts continue next week. Then, on November 24, fans will be able to vote for their favorite of those four artists. The winner of that vote will get to perform in the Rose Parade on January 1, 2026.

What Do Fans Think of This New Feature?

As is to be expected when The Voice adds a new feature to the competition, fans have had plenty to say about it. Some viewers on social media expressed disappointment with the coaches’ choices so far, while others took issue with the concept as a whole.

“The Mic Drop button was such a waste of a twist,” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter). “Instead of it being for the Rose Parade it should’ve been saves where we vote for only 1 to advance to the Playoffs.”

Another X user wrote that the prize of getting to sing at the Rose Parade “sounds lame,” while someone else complained that the Mic Drop button “doesn’t really do anything that affects the competition or the show at all,” calling it “basically useless and not needed.”

Meanwhile, some fans on Reddit suggested that the button should be used to recognize the loser of the Knockout rather than giving something extra to the winner. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
