Former The Voice coach Blake Shelton admitted in a recent interview that the show doesn’t produce big stars, speculating about the reason for this. He also shared why he thinks his new talent show The Road is doing things differently.

Blake Shelton on The Voice Not Producing Stars

A common complaint about The Voice as a talent show is that its winners have not become huge stars in the same way the early winners of American Idol did. Blake Shelton, who was a coach on the show for 23 seasons, acknowledged this when speaking to Country Countdown USA last month.

“It bothered me more than it bothered the TV people,” Shelton said of The Voice failing to produce a superstar. “It’s easy to see why. By the time the artist wins the show, they’ve already moved on to the next season. But also, that show was more about the coaches, and that’s why it was so popular, and not as much focus on the artists.”

Shelton recently premiered a new CBS talent show called The Road, which follows several musicians as they join country star Keith Urban on tour. Unlike The Voice, Shelton is confident that big names will come out of this series.

“I think we found stars,” Shelton said. “Because they will perform an original song. Some of those original songs will take off and go viral. Whether they win or not. Their music will be available when the show airs, so they won’t have to wait for the end of the show to buy their music.”

Shelton Was a Coach for 23 Seasons

Blake Shelton was one of the original coaches on The Voice when it first premiered in 2011. He remained on the coaching panel for a total of 23 seasons, before saying goodbye to his spinning red chair for good in 2023.

In his more than a decade on the show, Shelton coached the winning artist a whopping nine times. His most recent win came in Season 22, when his artist Bryce Leatherwood was named the winner. Surprisingly, Shelton did not win his final season. Instead, Niall Horan’s artist Gina Miles took home the trophy.
