The Voice has been airing on NBC since 2011, with a total of 28 seasons so far and a 29th in the works. How much longer can fans expect to watch the talent show? Will ratings affect the network’s decision to keep renewing it?
Will The Voice’s Ratings Keep It on the Air?
Over the years, ratings for The Voice have fallen from what they once were when the show was in its early seasons. To put it into perspective, the first season premiered with over 11 million viewers. In comparison, Season 28’s premiere drew a little more than 5 million viewers.
In early 2025, as The Voice Season 27 was airing on NBC the same night as American Idol on ABC, Idol came out on top in the ratings. However, despite its declining viewership over the years, The Voice is still a top show on NBC.
In 2024, the show’s Season 26 premiere beat the America’s Got Talent finale in the ratings, as NBC came out above the other major networks in entertainment programming for that week.
Because of this, fans probably don’t have too much reason to worry that the show will be canceled any time soon. Although viewers often point to the show’s failure to produce big stars, the same can be said of other talent shows like American Idol. If that were a problem, both shows would have been canceled years ago.
Season 29 Has Already Been Announced
We know that The Voice will have at least one more season on NBC, as Season 29 has already been announced. This “Battle of Champions” season will premiere in the spring and star three veteran coaches — Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Adam Levine.
The success or failure of this upcoming season, which features popular coaches and new twists including the return of past contestants, could be a good indicator of the show’s future.
If NBC is dissatisfied with the show’s performance, it’s possible that The Voice will be downsized to one season per year rather than two. A single fall season each calendar year would keep the show away from its talent show competitor American Idol, which typically airs in the spring.
