A fan on Twitter posted two black and white photos side by side on Monday. In one, a very young Grande smiles for the camera beside Chenoweth. In the next, the pair pose together to promote the upcoming season of The Voice, with Grande hugging Chenoweth.
The fan captioned the tweet, “how it started / how it’s going.” Chenoweth retweeted the comparison, writing, “i’m crying. gulp.” She tagged Grande, who retweeted Chenoweth’s post. Grande first met Chenoweth when she was 9 years old, at a performance of the musical Wicked.
“Her Nana and mom brought her backstage and she goes, ‘I want to be you when I grow up,'” Chenoweth told Us Weekly last year. “And I was like, you’re so little … she came up to my waist. I felt like Heidi Klum. And then we stayed in touch.”
The pair appeared together in Hairspray Live! in 2016, and they joined forces on a cover of “You Don’t Own Me” for Chenoweth’s 2019 album For the Girls. Chenoweth says they’ve also gone on double dates together. She called Grande her “little nugget,” adding, “I love her so much.”
