Tyra Banks is currently the subject of controversy over revelations made about her show America’s Next Top Model in a new Netflix docuseries. The reality competition series aired for 24 seasons, officially coming to an end in 2018.
Tyra Banks Receives Backlash Over ANTM Docuseries
Netflix recently released a three-part docuseries titled Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model. The series has gotten people talking on social media, with many criticizing the show’s creator and host, Tyra Banks.
One of the most controversial parts of the docuseries addresses a situation involving Season 2 contestant Shandi Sullivan. Sullivan spoke about how her sexual assault was framed as a cheating scandal, saying she was “blacked out” during the encounter with a man in Italy.
“No one did anything to stop it. And it all got filmed, all of it,” Sullivan said of the situation. In response, Banks said of the incident, “I do remember her story. It’s a little difficult for me to talk about production because that’s not my territory.”
Other controversies addressed in the docuseries include the pressure put on Season 6 winner Dani Evans to get her tooth gap filled, as well as a tone-deaf photo shoot in which the competing models were made up to look like other races.

Banks Didn’t Visit Miss J After Stroke
The new Netflix docuseries also included an update on ANTM runway coach J. Alexander, better known as Miss J, who suffered a stroke in 2022 and spent five weeks in a coma. He was left paralyzed, saying, “I’m the person who taught models how to walk and now I can’t walk.”
Miss J’s co-stars Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker reportedly visited him in the hospital. When asked if Tyra Banks had ever visited him, Miss J replied, “No, not yet. Never came and visited.” Miss J then reportedly checked his phone to see a new message from Banks asking to visit him.
“Were there mistakes? Yeah. Lots. Was Tyra responsible for all of them? No, of course not,” ANTM photographer and judge Nigel Barker recently told CNN. “But was she a part of it? Yes.”
