Snoop Dogg is back as a coach for The Voice Season 28, but not everyone is happy to see him on the panel. Some fans have expressed disappointment over the rapper’s return to the show due to comments he made earlier this year.
Snoop Dogg Returns to The Voice After Controversial Comments
Around the time The Voice Season 28 premiered on NBC Monday night, Reddit user WorkingPanic3579 posted a thread titled, “Really disappointed NBC brought Snoop Dogg back after anti-LGBT comments.”
They linked to an Entertainment Weekly article published last month in which the rapper was quoted complaining about LGBTQ+ representation in children’s media. He recalled his grandson asking questions about a same-sex couple featured in the movie Lightyear.
“Oh sh–, I didn’t come in for this sh–. I just came to watch the goddamn movie,” Snoop said of his thoughts at the time, adding, “I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”
As the Reddit user wrote of Snoop’s comments, “What if another of the celebrities had made similarly inappropriate comments about someone of another race that were widely publicized? They’d be yanked and NBC would distance themselves immediately.”
A number of fans in the aforementioned Reddit thread shared similar thoughts on Snoop Dogg’s return. One user acknowledged that much of the season had already been filmed before Snoop made the controversial comments. However, they added that they were already disappointed to see him back on the show following his performance at an inauguration event for Donald Trump earlier this year.
Another user wrote that they’re “not watching The Voice this season because of him.” Someone else remarked that they “lost all respect for him” following his recent comments. Yet another user wrote, “I didn’t watch American Idolbecause of Carrie Underwood. I’m going to have to think about this one.”
Not everyone was in agreement, however. A couple of users complained about “cancel culture,” while another tried to defend Snoop’s comments by arguing that “he was not ready to explain to his young grandson how two women would have a baby, not that he didn’t approve of them.”
