The Voice returns to NBC on Monday, March 2 for the second episode of Battle of Champions. This season differs from others due to the panel featuring only three coaches, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, and John Legend.
R&B Singer Earns Triple-Chair Turn
Ahead of Monday night’s episode, The Voice released an early clip of singer Mike Steele. The performance features him singing Giveon’s “For Tonight.” His smooth R&B vocals were good enough to turn the chairs of Levine, Legend, and eventually Clarkson.
After the performance, the 28 year old’s deep talking voice shocked judges, since it differed so much from his talking voice. Mike went on to share that he’s done music his whole life, but went on to study music to better his life for his children. He hopes to teach music in the future.
When discussing the singer’s abilities it was pointed out that he’s the ultimate mix of both Levine and Legend. He has Levine’s higher octave and Legend’s lower octave. Clarkson admitted that she would take Mike in a different direction than the other coaches.
She pointed out that both Levine and Legend would want Mike to perform R&B for the entirety of his time on the show, but she would want him to jump around in genres to help him really find himself. Legend claimed this wouldn’t be a good option since the show more or less is helping artists find fans. Clarkson then pointed out that she sang Aretha Franklin on American Idol, won, then released a pop punk album.
The clip then cut out before Mike could pick a team. Fans will need to tune into Monday night’s episode to find out which team Mike joins.
Triple-Chair Turns Are a Competition for Coaches
This season, there’s a competition happening within the larger competition. Coaches are fighting to get the most Triple-Chair turn contestants on their teams to earn a Super Steal down the line. Also, Coaches are allowed 10 artists on their team.
As of the premiere episode, Team Kelly has the most artists, while Team Adam has the most Triple-Chair turns. Team Kelly currently has five members (featuring one Triple-Chair turn) and Team Adam has three members (including two Triple-Chair turns). Legend currently has zero Triple-Chair turns and two artists.
Be sure to tune into The Voice on NBC on Mondays at 9PM ET so you don’t miss a second of this competition. Are you watching The Voice this season? Let us know your thoughts on X!
