Kelly Clarkson Opened Up About Her Complicated Relationship With Her Father
In this interview, Kelly described herself as a “typical last born.” She said that the last born child is someone who is “always watching” what’s going on around the house. “Any time you see any trouble in your house or any trouble around you’re always like willing to tap dance on fire just to like make everyone amused” she said.
Kelly’s family did not all grow up together. Her older sister grew up with her aunt and her older brother grew up with her father. Her mom then got remarried and Kelly got five stepbrothers and sisters. The American Idol winner was alone with her mother before that time period. Her father left when she was six years old.
When asked if Kelly has spoken to her father she said: “no I’ve never really been in touch with him.” But she didn’t want people feeling sorry for her. “If you didn’t grow up with it, it’s hard to miss something you never had.” She has tried in the past to reach out to her dad because her brother insisted on all of the family coming together.
“Even if it isn’t your father or whoever it is in your life if someone presents such a cancerous environment and then just keeps hurting you and even if they’re doing it inadvertently and they just don’t know better, you should just not have that person in your life,” she said which earned applause from the audience. “I shouldn’t have to work so much for someone’s love.”
This kind of vulnerability that Kelly is so willing to show is just one of the reasons why she is the real queen of talent. She is always so open and raw not only with her music but at all times in her life. Kelly’s hit song “Because Of You” was actually written about her experience with her parent’s divorce. The Voice coach wrote another song “Piece By Piece” about her experience with motherhood and how it is immensely different than growing up with an absentee father. “I will never leave her like you left me” she sings about her daughter.
She opened up about the song’s meaning in 2019 and revealed that her father had passed away. “That song for me, personally, behind the scenes, it’s evolved mostly for me,” she said in an interview. “So like from the moment I wrote it, just being pregnant with my little girl and then you know all the moments that I really did try and make it work with my father and life and just get completely let down to where you know he passed away months ago. So that’s why.”
In the song, Kelly sings that she knows her kids will always have their father Brandon Blackstock around. The pair have two children together, six-year-old River Rose, and four-year-old Remington Alexander. Though the two are currently going through a divorce, Brandon has been there for the kids as the family spent the entirety of quarantine together during the coronavirus pandemic.
