Reading Time: 4 minutes
Camila Cabello is now one of the biggest stars in the music industry that got the chance of a lifetime auditioning for The X Factor in 2012. But at first, she didn’t even know if she would make it out onto the stage. It was Simon Cowell that made her dreams come true after finding her crying backstage. Let’s take a look back at her journey in honor of her 24th birthday.
Simon Cowell Made Camila Cabello’s ‘X Factor’ Audition Happen
Camila traveled to The X Factor auditions in Greensboro, North Carolina ready to share her singing talent with the world. Things took a bit of a turn when she was told by producers that she was a “reserve.” The show was running short on time which meant there was a possibility Camila would not have been able to audition at all.
A chance encounter with Simon backstage changed her life forever. “I went to have a cigarette in this arena and I passed this girl who was lying on the floor crying. And I thought maybe one of her brothers or sisters or whoever had auditioned because she was so upset” Simon told Variety.

Simon was left shocked that the producers told Camila she was a reserve. She traveled there were her entire family and he was determined to get her up on the stage to sing. “‘What are you talking about?’ I’ve never heard of [a reserve] before but just go on now. I’m probably back in my seat in five minutes,'” he told her at the time. “And she comes down, auditions, and she blows the roof off. Literally, I mean that was it.”
Simon Knew The Young Singer Would Go On To Be A Star
Camila was put into a group with Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jauregui that was later named Fifth Harmony. Simon knew from the group’s performance of “Anything Could Happen” that Camila was going to be a star.

They were mentored by Simon throughout the competition and finished in third place. Simon was a huge fan of the group and saw major potential. He signed them to Syco Records in a joint deal with L.A. Reid’s Epic Records. They toured the world and dominated the charts with their albums Reflection and 7/27 before Camila left the group in 2016.
