During a recent appearance on DWTS Season 34 contestant Danielle Fishel’s podcast Pod Meets World, Peta Murgatroyd spoke about her husband Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s opinionated nature, explaining that this quality attracted her to him.

“I knew that I wanted somebody in my life that was strong and passionate,” Murgatroyd said of her husband, according to E! News. “And whatever he says, it really does come down to the passion behind it.”

Murgatroyd acknowledged that Chmerkovskiy “may say things in the wrong tone,” or his words “may come out the wrong way.” However, she went on to say, “That’s his heritage, that’s his culture, that’s his low voice when he speaks. He speaks like this because he’s passionate. It doesn’t come from an angry, bitter place at all.”

Chmerkovskiy Has Received Backlash Over His Comments

During the most recent season of DWTS, Chmerkovskiy received backlash from fans over some of his comments. That includes his opinion that new pro Jan Ravnik, who was previously a backup dancer for Taylor Swift, had “absolutely no business” being on the show.

“There’s zero foundation technique, quality, understanding of the partnership,” Chmerkovskiy said of Ravnik on Murgatroyd’s podcast in October. “It is absurd, and this is unreal how blind we have to be and God forbid say what’s obviously there.”

Chmerkovskiy later issued an apology to Ravnik and asked to meet with him so they could “bury the hatchet.” The former pro also caused controversy in November when he criticized Jordan Chiles’ finale freestyle routine, saying it “was just a good hip-hop, it was not a good freestyle.”

What do you think? Is Chmerkovskiy just “passionate,” as Murgatroyd says, or does he deserve the backlash over his remarks? Let us know in the comments below.
