Kelly Clarkson Says Kids Are Sad Over Her Divorce
Earlier this week, Clarkson appeared on Angie Martinez’s IRL podcast, where she talked about how her kids have been handling her split from their dad, Brandon Blackstock. Clarkson filed for divorce in 2020 after almost seven years of marriage.
“I ask my kids every night when we’re snuggling and I put them to bed, ‘Are you happy? And if you’re not, what could make you happier?'” Clarkson said, according to People. “Especially the past two years … it kills me [but] I want them to be honest so I don’t ever say, ‘Oh God, don’t tell me that,’ but a lot of times it would be like, ‘I’m just really sad. I wish Mommy and Daddy were in the same house.'”
Clarkson added that she tells her kids, “I get it. I’m from a divorced family as well. I get it. That sucks. But we’re going to work it out. And you are so loved by both of us.”
The singer said she thinks it’s important to communicate with them about their feelings. She also called her kids “very independent.”

Clarkson Opens Up About the Split on Her New Album
Clarkson is planning to release a new album later this year inspired by her divorce. She said the situation made for a “really rough couple of years.”
“Every phase is on my next record,” Clarkson told Martinez. “There is sadness. There is rage. It’s a lot because you go through all those emotions. If you don’t hit all those, were you really in it?”
The singer said therapy helped her through the rough time, adding that she was “destroyed” and explaining, “That’s a loss. It’s a death.”
In addition to hosting her talk show The Kelly Clarkson Show, the singer is currently coaching on The Voice Season 23, airing Mondays and Tuesdays on NBC.
