Kelly Clarkson Is ‘Devastated’ for Her Kids After Brandon Blackstock’s Death

News broke on Thursday that Kelly Clarkson’s ex-husband Brandon Blackstock had passed away at age 48 after a three-year cancer battle. According to a new report, Clarkson is “devastated” for the two children she shared with Blackstock.

Earlier this week, Clarkson shared that she would have to postpone the remaining August dates for her current Studio Sessions residency in Las Vegas. She revealed that her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock had been ill the past year, and she needed “to be fully present” for her children.
Not long after Clarkson shared this update, news broke that Blackstock had sadly passed away. A source told People that the singer is “devastated” for her children — 11-year-old daughter River and 7-year-old son Remington.
“When she found out that he was sick, she remained protective of him for their sake,” the source shared. “Kelly has always tried to keep things classy. It became clear earlier this year that Brandon was not doing well. She’s been devastated for the kids.”
Although Clarkson’s divorce from Blackstock was “incredibly difficult,” the source said that she “always wanted her kids to have the best relationship possible with their dad,” adding, “She never spoke poorly about Brandon to the kids.”

Clarkson Filed for Divorce in 2020
Clarkson married Blackstock in 2013. Blackstock was the son of Clarkson’s former manager Narvel Blackstock, who was previously married to Reba McEntire. During their marriage, Blackstock worked as Clarkson’s manager. The couple welcomed two kids together before Clarkson filed for divorce in 2020.
The divorce was finalized in March 2022. Clarkson has been open about how difficult the split was for her, and her 2023 album Chemistry was inspired by the experience. Since Clarkson also had divorced parents growing up, she shared that she was able to understand what her kids were feeling.
When her children expressed sadness that their parents were no longer together, Clarkson would tell them, “I get it. I’m from a divorced family as well. I get it. That sucks. But we’re going to work it out. And you are so loved by both of us.”
