In a new interview with Zane Lowe, Kelly Clarkson opened up about her divorce from her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock. Clarkson is preparing to release her new album Chemistry, which is inspired by the experience.
Kelly Clarkson Opens Up About Her Divorce
Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock in June 2020 after almost seven years of marriage. The couple has two children together — daughter River Rose and son Remington Alexander. They finally settled their divorce in March 2022.
“I don’t know how people get through anything like that, because I’m not gonna say I did it gracefully behind closed doors, by myself,” Clarkson said of her divorce. “Just to be brutally honest, I did not handle it well. I had many sessions with just my friends of, like… I couldn’t even speak, I was crying so hard.”
She said that even before separating from Blackstock, there were “unhealthy habits that you recognize that you didn’t see before,” adding, “Hindsight is a lot easier.” She explained that it wasn’t good for her to be “always taking care of the other person and not yourself.”

Clarkson Discusses Her Approach to the New Album
While speaking with Lowe, Clarkson also discussed her approach to the new album, saying, “I do like the idea of taking a quirky, pop, happy sound, melodically … and then putting a dark lyric with it.” The singer agreed with Lowe’s description of “heartbreak bangers.”
Clarkson added that she wanted “to have the album not just be a divorce or breakup album, it was more of a relationship album.” That’s why she included songs like “Favorite Kind of High.” She explained that she doesn’t “want to wash it all off,” saying, “It didn’t work out, but that doesn’t mean it was all bad.”
Chemistry is set to be released on Friday, June 23. Clarkson has already released several songs from the album, including “I Hate Love,” “Red Flag Collector,” and “Lighthouse.” She also started things off with the double single “Me” and “Mine.”
