Emma Slater, Trevor Donovan React to Question About Their ‘DWTS’ Chemistry
Reading Time: 3 minutes
One of the most surprising moments during Monday night’s new episode of Dancing with the Stars came when co-host Alfonso Ribeiro asked Trevor Donovan and his partner Emma Slater about their chemistry. The pair has since reacted to the “out of the blue” question.
Emma Slater, Trevor Donovan Talk DWTS Chemistry
“I gotta know — are those your acting skills or was that real?” Ribeiro asked Donovan and Slater after their Elvis Night performance. At the time, Donovan replied, “If you’re really doing a good job acting, it all comes from the truth so there’s something real in every performance.”
The question was especially awkward because it was only recently reported that Slater and her husband, fellow pro dancer Sasha Farber, have split after four years of marriage. Farber is partnered with Selma Blair this season.
Slater reacted to the moment in an interview with Us Weekly, saying, “I couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘That question! Like, wow, just out the blue.’ … We really do get on and have great chemistry, which made this dance so much easier. But then when Alfonso asked that question, I was so glad you [Donovan] answered because I was like, ‘I can’t.’”
Donovan elaborated on his initial response, comparing it to doing an intimate scene with a fellow actor in a movie, adding that “luckily, we’ve had a few weeks of getting to know each other to become friends and break down that wall and be comfortable with it.”

The Couple Danced the Rumba This Week
During Monday’s show, Slater and Donovan danced the Rumba to “Always on My Mind” by Elvis Presley. They earned a combined score of 30 from the judges and were safe to move on to next week’s show. This was an improvement over last year’s score of 21.
As Slater explained to Us Weekly, people “expect passion” from the Rumba. She added, “I know we have this great connection, this great chemistry. And so I really fought hard to achieve the environment for us to just be ourselves and be expressive and we brought the steam … I think it was a dance that really needed it and it felt really good in the moment.”
You can catch Slater and Donovan’s next dance on Monday night’s new episode of Dancing with the Stars, streaming live on Disney+ at 8 p.m. ET.
