‘The Comeback Stage’ Recap: David Owens vs. Kanard Thomas + What’s Next
Reading Time: 2 minutes
This week on The Comeback Stage, we have the last Battle with a Blind Audition comeback artist and a Battles comeback artist. Fifth coach Bebe Rexha chose to bring back Team Kelly’s David Owens. So he will be going up against Kanard Thomas! The winner will earn the last spot in the Semifinals.
Let’s see what went down on this week of The Comeback Stage! Then we’ll explain what happens next on the series.
David Owens
David is fresh off a loss in the Battle Rounds. There, he was paired against Rebecca Howell, who out-sang him on their cover of “Unchained Melody.” The Team Kelly member is back with a vengeance, hoping to earn a spot in the Live Shows.
This time, David is singing “OK, It’s Alright With Me” by Eric Hutchinson. He explains it’s a song he’s familiar with and from the first time he sings it, you can tell that’s true. Bebe even says she got goosebumps after his rehearsal and that she loves the grit in his voice. “When he sings, you feel him.” She suggests that he just needs to let loose because he seems nervous. In his final performance, David seems to take Bebe’s notes to heart and really goes for it!
Kanard Thomas
Kanard earned his way here after beating J.T. Rodriguez in the first round on The Comeback Stage. He decided to sing “Burn” by Usher for his Battle with David. Kanard says he thinks he has a similar tone to Usher and he’s one of his favorite artists. Bold claim, but let’s see how it goes.
I actually really love Kanard’s voice on this song, even though it’s a challenging choice. He hits some crazy notes and runs, but falls apart a little at the end in the rehearsal. Bebe compliments his control, saying it’s “ridiculous” and “amazing.” When it comes time for the performance, he absolutely nails it. Even the ending!
Announcing the Winner + What’s Next
After two solid performances, Bebe had to pick a winner. Between David and Kanard, she chose…Kanard Thomas to move on! He is the first Blind Auditions comeback artist to beat a Battles comeback artist.
Now, we move on to the Semifinals. Savannah Brister, Ciera Dumas, and Kanard Thomas will sing for their lives once again! Bebe will choose two of them to move on next week, then America will vote for who they want to join the Live Shows in the Top 13. The voting happens live during the broadcast version of The Voice.
So stay tuned for The Comeback Stage next week! Then, one of these artists will join a team on The Voice the week after. But for now, it’s back to the Lay’s Recording Lounge for us.
