‘AGT’ Comedian Alex Hooper Shares That He Has Cancer
Hooper posted the news of his cancer diagnosis on Instagram Monday, writing, “I’m going to treat this like I do everything: by making jokes, laughing, being silly, wearing shiny outfits, and having fun.”
He encouraged followers to check out his new YouTube video, in which he shared that he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma after noticing he had swelling in his neck. Right now, Hooper said it’s either stage 3 or stage 4. He added that it is “a quite curable form of cancer.”
Hooper shared that he’ll be going through chemotherapy over the next several months and won’t be able to travel for work. However, he said he wants to do comedy shows in Los Angeles and “talk about what I’m going through.” He asked fans not to treat him any differently if they run into him.
The comedian joked that he’s already a fun person to be around, and now he has to be “even more likable because I have cancer.” He added, “If anything, you need a reason to hate my ass, and now you can’t.”
Hooper Says Comedy Will Get Him Through
Hooper got emotional as he explained, “I don’t want to be taken care of, but I also understand that I have to be.” He said it was hard to admit that he has to accept help, and that he can’t do everything he wants to do as he receives treatment.
He emphasized that he wants to continue to do comedy, saying, “That is the one thing that is gonna get me through this, is not burying myself away from everybody, but being out and vocal and present and the large personality that you all know I am.”
Hooper first auditioned for Season 13 of America’s Got Talent, roasting the judges and host in his routine. He didn’t make it through, but he returned in Season 15, once again roasting the panel. This time, he made it through, going all the way to the Quarterfinals before being eliminated.
