‘AGT’ Recap: Performances, Results in One Night as Quarterfinals Wrap Up

America’s Got Talent Season 21 returned on Tuesday night for a special three-hour episode, as 11 more acts took the stage in the Quarterfinals. Voting was open during the show, and results were announced the same night. Former AGT judge Heidi Klum filled in for Simon Cowell on the panel, and Sofia Vergara had control of the Golden Buzzer to send one act to the Finals.

Sofia Vergara Hits AGT Golden Buzzer in Quarterfinals

Each week of the Quarterfinals, one of the AGT judges had had the opportunity to press the Golden Buzzer to send an act straight into the Season 21 Finals. This week, it was Sofia Vergara’s turn to do the honors.

Vergara mentioned that she wished she could hit the Golden Buzzer for the first two acts of the night (magic duo Young & Strange and singer Lara D), but she argued that it was too early in the show. Later, she finally decided it was time when Unitree took the stage.

The stunning routine featured several robots performing martial arts and acrobatic moves. Judge Mel B was so amazed that she actually had to clarify that the robots weren’t human beings. Howie Mandel called the performance “one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Although Vergara called the act “a little bit scary,” she was impressed enough to press the Golden Buzzer to send Unitree straight into the Season 21 Finals. She admitted that they probably didn’t need her help to move on, since America would have voted for them.

Which Acts Made It Through to the Semifinals?

During the final hour of Tuesday’s new AGT episode, host Terry Crews announced the Top 5 acts according to America’s vote. That includes magic duo Young & Strange, comedian Cesar Dias, music duo Bird and Byron, and singers Lara D and Travis Garland.

Earlier in the show, Young & Strange put on an impressive and funny magic routine that involved them seamlessly switching places. Heidi Klum said she could see the act in Las Vegas. As for Cesar Dias, his performance on Tuesday involved him singing “Unchained Melody” while performing physical comedy. Klum said she preferred Dias to some of the non-comedic music acts.

Also in the Top 5 was music duo Bird and Byron, who performed “You Stole the Show” by Sienna Spiro. Howie Mandel said they were “like a fine wine,” although Mel B said it “wasn’t their best” vocal performance. Another singer who made it into the Top 5 was Lara D, who sang “Lost My Mind in Paris” by Faouzia, with Sofia Vergara praising her “commanding presence.”

Singer Travis Garland also impressed voters, as he performed “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande during Tuesday’s show. As Klum said, “I love everything about you.” Mandel said Travis is the best solo singer of the season.

Only three acts out of the Top 5 could move on at the end of the night. Those acts turned out to be Cesar Dias, Young & Strange, and Travis Garland. That meant we had to say goodbye to Lara D and Bird and Byron, as well as the other acts who performed this week — Cameron Logsdon, Tyron & Margo, Akira, Jesse Joe, and Rubén Roldán.

The Semifinals Will Take Place Next Week

The AGT Season 21 Semifinals will air live next week on NBC, featuring twelve acts who were chosen by voters during the four weeks of Quarterfinals. In addition to the three acts who moved on this week, the round will also feature Royal Lasers, Olivia Befus, Luke Taleno, Veronika Goroshkova, Come Here, Geno Ploeger, Acro Canine Crew, Kameron Marshall, and Daniel Alvarez.

Additionally, four acts are moving straight to the AGT Finals thanks to receiving the Golden Buzzer during the Quarterfinals. Those acts are magic group Hundred Fingers, guitarist Nene Royal, singer Lai Noelle, and robot act Unitree.
