‘The Masked Singer’ Judges to Be Punished for Take It Off Buzzer Screw-Ups

Reading Time: 3 minutes

If you’ve been watching The Masked Singer this season, you’ll know that there’s been a lot of talk about the new Take It Off Buzzer. The judges were encouraged to hit it when they were sure they knew a contestant’s identity. If they were right, the contestant had to unmask immediately and leave the show.

Ken Jeong and Jenny McCarthy used up both opportunities to use the Buzzer in Season 6, and they were wrong about the contestant’s identity both times. Instead of getting two points toward the Golden Ear trophy, they received punishments for their mistakes.

‘The Masked Singer’ Judges Receive Punishments for Take It Off Buzzer

Last week, Jeong was so confident that Pepper was Sara Bareilles, he hit the Take It Off Buzzer. He turned out to be wrong (Pepper was later unmasked as Natasha Bedingfield), so as punishment, host Nick Cannon told him he’ll have to wash all of his cars.

Then this week, McCarthy hit the Buzzer for Caterpillar, guessing that he was Jake Gyllenhaal. She was also wrong, as Caterpillar was later revealed to be Bobby Berk from Queer Eye. As her punishment, Cannon told her she has to clean Jeong’s dressing room. Even Jeong was horrified, saying, “I wouldn’t wish that on anybody.”

Now that the Buzzer has been used for Group A and Group B, the Masked Singer judges aren’t allowed to use it again this season. That means that it was pretty much pointless, as it didn’t unmask any celebrities early, and it also didn’t earn the judges any extra points.

To make it all even more pointless, the contestants Jeong and McCarthy were guessing about ended up being unmasked later in the episode anyway, so we only had to wait a few more minutes to find out their identities.

Will They Bring the Buzzer Back Next Season?

The Take It Off Buzzer had a huge buildup this season, with pretty much no payoff. But to be honest, the Buzzer seemed like a strange addition in the first place, since it went against the basic premise of the show.

Contestants are unmasked when they receive the fewest number of votes from the audience, judges, and superfans. That means the most popular contestants are the last ones to be unmasked. This doesn’t really apply to Pepper and Caterpillar since they were eliminated in the same episode, but what if a judge were to guess correctly and unmask someone who otherwise might have made it to the end of the show?

Why should a talented contestant be forced to leave the show early just because one of the judges figured out their identity? Banana Split, for example, has a good chance of winning the whole season. But what if a judge hit the Take It Off Buzzer and correctly guessed who they are? They’d have to leave the show before their time.

I have a feeling The Masked Singer might remove the Buzzer completely next season, as it really didn’t add anything to the experience except embarrassment for the judges. What do you think? Let us know your opinions about the Take It Off Buzzer in the comments below.

I don’t think the take it off button is fare to the singers who might of won the show. Please don’t bring it back next season.
