History of entertainment would dictate that several aspiring artists have found fame during and after their attempt in a reality competition series. While many have tried to apply this victory formula, a lot of them also failed to flourish.

So, what makes a successful artist after a competition show? The answer lies behind every artist’s decision upon winning or not winning the series.

Multiple reality competition series exist to discover the right amount of charm and talent required of a superstar. Skill and charisma are imperative to capture the hearts of the public. However, without passion and a tinge of stubbornness to climb to the top, success may never be earned.

American Idol Alums Who Made It Through

Perhaps everyone knows popstar Kelly Clarkson, the first ever winner of American Idol. Back in her interview with Guardian, she said that she had to beg and cry in front of her record label offices to get “Miss Independent” out. Today, she’s already received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

EGOT winner Jennifer Hudson also jump started her career in American Idol. She experienced a shocking elimination during her stint, but she bounced back from the loss and won an Oscar two years later. This year, she launched her daytime talk show, The Jennifer Hudson Show.

The X Factor Alums Who Left Their Original Groups

Before Camila Cabello was famous, she was a force to be reckoned with in The X Factor. She finished the competition as part of the girl band Fifth Harmony which arguably become one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. However, after years of obtaining success as a girl group member, she drastically chose to maneuver her career as a solo artist. Despite uncertainties, she managed to create breakout music hits and rack up album sales.

Harry Styles’ hike in the music industry doesn’t differ. Coming from the UK edition of the same show, he started as a member of the English-Irish pop boy band One Direction, but later launched a solo career amid the group’s hiatus.

What Does It Mean to Be Successful After a Competition Show?

Truly, it’s easy to measure success based on number of streams, album sales, wide fanbase, and immense awards. After a competition series, winners would secure a prize that would likely lead them to fame. However, their journey would ultimately lead to a favorable outcome if and only if they continued to chase the dream regardless of its frightening risks.

I don’t believe that fate has simply been kind to these artists, the reason why they secured consecutive wins after joining a competition show. Tracing their journey, there was always a point where they are left with no choice but to hope. Somehow, it didn’t matter if they won the show. The secret weapon remains to be grit, desire, and tenacity.
