‘The Voice’ Coach Kelly Clarkson Has Some Beef With iHeartRadio Despite Performing At Their Festival
The 2018 iHeartRadio Music Festival happened this weekend in Las Vegas, and it was packed with great performances. One of this year’s headliners was none other than former American Idol champion and current The Voice coach Kelly Clarkson, who seems to have a love-hate relationship with the company.
In addition to performing several of her biggest hits from over the years, such as “Since U Been Gone”, “My Life Would Suck Without You”, and “Love So Soft”, Kelly sang “Respect” in the middle of her 24-minute set as both a throwback to her Idol days and a tribute to the recently deceased Aretha Franklin after taking to Twitter to express her gratitude to Franklin as an artist shortly after the music legend’s passing last month at the age of 76.
Aretha Franklin is the reason why I sing from that part deep inside of me that few could ever reach. She was my favorite and will always be. What a gift she has left all of us with her musical footprints. There will never be another like her. She was truly special. #QueenOfSoul

Kelly’s appearance at the festival was not without some tension; earlier this week she made it clear she wasn’t entirely happy with her relationship with the company via another tweet, expressing annoyance that iHeartRadio invited her to perform at their event but hasn’t really been playing her music on their stations.
….except for getting my songs played on your stations. I guess I’m cool enough to invite but not cool enough to play my record. #truth #check #seeyasaturday HAHAHAHAHAHA #MeaningOfLife https://t.co/WNGa0xqAyN

Kelly’s fans were quick too piggyback on her statement, expressing disappointment in iHeartRadio for neglecting to play her music.
@iHeartRadio y’all deserved that shade. Every hour, your stations play like 25 minutes of the same 15 songs on your short playlist and the rest of the hour is filled with commercials. @kelly_clarkson is my hero. pic.twitter.com/ZsYjnaM3o3

Even popular YouTuber Tyler Oakley got in on the calling out of the company.

It does seem pretty strange that iHeartRadio would want Kelly to perform at their festival but not play her songs on the regular. She’s a huge star and her music is great, so I’m really not sure what’s up with that. However, Kelly did agree to perform at the event knowing this, so I’m not sure what her motivations were either. I do hope the company plays more of her music now, though, because you can’t go wrong with a good Kelly Clarkson song!
Be sure to tune in to the season premiere of The Voice tonight at 8/7c on NBC to catch Kelly and her fellow coaches during the blind auditions.
