It’s a well known fact that The X Factor UK has been in a steady decline in the ratings for years. The once extremely popular show is having trouble competing with dance show Strictly Come Dancing. All of the efforts that Simon and the other producers have done to try and boost the ratings seems to be in vain. Saturday night The X Factor had it’s worst night ever in the ratings.
That’s not the worst night this season either. The show had the lowest ratings in the 14 seasons it’s been on the air. While Strictly Come Dancing had 10.3 million viewers, The X Factor managed only 3.7 million. Yikes. SCD didn’t just beat The X Factor in the ratings, it annihilated it. This season Simon changed the judges panel, simplified the game play, and brought on some really great talent. I’ve been writing our recaps of the show and they are pretty damn good. There are some real potential stars on the show this year. Of all the talent shows we cover, The X Factor has produced the most stars. Let’s not forget that Little Mix and One Direction started on the show. ITV has said that they stand by The X Factor and have no plans to cancel the show. Of course they said that before this season.
I really don’t want them to cancel The X Factor. It’s an institution in both Britain and the U.S. It is the closest thing we have to the original American Idol from back in the Simon Cowell days. For my money that was the greatest incarnation of the talent show ever. Although rules and formats may have changed a little bit, The X Factor and the original American Idol laid the groundwork from which all of these shows sprouted. I guess if people aren’t interested anymore then they should put the show to sleep. It would be sad, though.
