‘The Voice’ Recap: Samara Brown Leaves the Coaches Fighting Over Her in the Battles
Reading Time: 3 minutes
The artists in The Voice Battles have been pushing the coaches’ buttons in the best way possible. The cliffhanger from last night’s episode was resolved right away. Jershika Maple chose to be on John Legend’s team after he and Ariana Grande hit their steals.
The coaches have wanted to save or steal almost every artist that has hit the stage so far. Legend’s team also delivered one of the best battles in the show’s history. Team Legend might be the team to look out for this season.
Blake Shelton Keeps His Team Strong with Country Artists in ‘The Voice’ Battles
Blake Shelton put Hailey Green and Lana Scott against each other in The Voice Battles. He chose for them to sing “Girl” by Maren Morris. It felt like Hailey was going to have a disadvantage during this battle because she is not used to singing pop-country. The 15-year-old totally proved her versatility in the competition during this performance.
Every coach has standouts or favorites on their team. Lana is definitely one of Shelton’s favorites because of the personality she brings to the stage. Hailey sounded a bit like Kelly Clarkson during this performance. Her rocker edge was really shining through. She pushed through the song with power. Hailey was chosen as the winner of the battle. Shelton always tries to keep one classic country artist on his team and that’s Lana. He hit his save for Lana which was not a shock at all. It’s a typical move in his The Voice playbook.
Where Shelton excelled in song choice during the Battles, Grande gave a super difficult song to two early favorites. Filipino singer Vaughn Mugol and Katherine Ann Mohler were given “Dilemma” by Nelly and Kelly Rowland. It’s a very hard song to sing. If you have ever tried to do karaoke to this song, you know how difficult it can be to match the energy of the person you’re singing it with. There was too much going on with this arrangement.
Vaughn was able to bring a new kind of swagger to the stage. Katherine was more technically perfect and was declared the winner. The Voice fans are absolutely going to be crushed to see Vaughn leaving the competition. His audition garnered almost 2.5 million views after sharing his story about being a nurse on the frontlines.
John Legend Pairs Two Powerhouse Vocalists Together
John Legend had a huge decision to make in the battle between Samara Brown and Brittany Bree. The pair performed “Something He Can Feel.” Legend’s goal was to not have Samara get lost during the song while changing so many of the melodies. Battle Advisor Camila Cabello predicted that this would be the best battle of the night. She suggested that the pair should have a riff-off on stage. She is seriously a musical genius.
Right before the battle began, Clarkson and Shelton told viewers that they still both had their steals. Legend reminded everyone that he still had his save. It was obvious that whoever lost the battle would still remain on the show. Samara sounded so good at the very beginning of the song. She had Clarkson up out of her seat cheering. She blew the roof off of the place and was not overpowered by Brittany at all.
Clarkson called their voices “insane” and knew right away that she was going to use her steal on either of them. Shelton said he was “blown away.” Legend chose Brittany as the winner of the battle even though Samara was absolutely killer. Legend hit his save while Clarkson and Grande hit their steals.
Legend admitted that he should have never paired them together because he didn’t want to lose either of them. Samara chose to stay with Team Legend. Hopefully, both Samara and Brittany can make it to the live shows. There is definitely room for two powerhouse vocalists on this team. We’ll just have to wait and see how Legend makes these difficult decisions in the Knockouts.
