After a long wait, The Voice has finally announced their mega mentor this season is Ed Sheeran! This singer songwriter is known for singing “Shape of You,” “Thinking Out Loud,” “Bad Habits,” and others. What does this rock/pop singer bring to the table for this season of The Voice?

Mega Mentors are a single celebrity artist who comes on to The Voice to coach all of the singers during the knockout round of the show. Last season, we saw Snoop Dogg as the Mega Mentor for the season and quite a few people were impressed with the knowledge he brought to the game.

Sheeran is really a great choice for this season of The Voice since he’s done it all. He’s known for his jazzy tone, but has also written songs for other artists like Justin Bieber, One Direction, Rita Ora, and more. Since he knows the music industry from the songwriting side as well, he’s a very versatile artist to have as this season’s Mega Mentor.

Ed Sheeran Began as a Song Writer

Sheeran skyrocketed to fame after his song “The A Team” debuted in 2011. Even before this singer made it in mainstream music, he had been writing and releasing songs for quite sometime in the United Kingdom. He became an overnight sensation after recording “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You” on SBTV’s YouTube page. People absolutely loved Sheeran and his music because of this video.

Soon after his viral fame, he signed to Asylum Records and began to promote his single in the U.S. Sheeran began his international success after his performance on Later… with Jools Holland on BBC. He performed “The A Team,” which became his first single off of his debut album “+.” The single sold 58,000 copies in the first week, and became a top ten hit in eight countries.

Since his rise to fame, Sheeran has released three other albums and has had his fair share of sold out performances. Although he didn’t begin his journey on any type of singing show, he’s known for having a sound of his own. He’s created his own almost permanent spots in both the U.S. and U.K. charts because of this.

His music became so popular because of his soothing voice and creation techniques. There wasn’t really a singer who had a style similar to Sheeran at the time. His music typically thrives off of an organic guitar or piano-based tune that perfectly exposes his soft voice. I think he’s the perfect person to bring as the mega mentor for a group of people who are trying to impress America with purely their voice.

How will he do on The Voice?

On this season of The Voice, we’ve heard the coaches repeatedly say that people needed to bring their own spin to the song during the blind auditions. I think Sheeran will be the perfect mega mentor for people who intend to find their own voices in the knockout rounds.

Before going on The Voice, this singer has been quite busy. On October 29 his newest album “=” will be released. This will be his fourth studio album and it’s already hitting the charts. The second single from this album is “Shivers,” which currently sits at No. 1 in the U.K.

Sheeran recently shared on instagram that he’s been writing and recording “=” since June 2017. On top of the new album, he’s been performing, releasing music videos, and planning his upcoming Summer 2022 tour.

It doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that Sheeran would be the mega mentor for this season. For the coach individual mentors, they typically choose someone they’re friends with, but the mega mentor is someone that all four coaches welcome into the show to help in the competition.

Although Ariana Grande is most likely the coach that knows Sheeran the best (considering they’ve collaborated), Blake Shelton and Kelly Clarkson have both performed flawless Sheeran covers. We can’t wait to see the excitement this iconic artist brings to the show.
