All Of The Talent Competition Shows Are Striving For More Inclusivity
Last night on America’s Got Talent, one of the featured acts was singer Brody James. Brody is a trans man and is the latest example of all of the talent competition shows striving to be more inclusive. While we at Talent Recap think this is great we also respect the fact that we know the shows are taking a big risk in featuring LGBTQ contestants.
The fact of the matter is that these shows are big in middle America and the South, places that unlike where we are headquartered in New York, may not take too kindly to someone like Brody or Ada Vox on American Idol or Chris Weaver on The Voice. I’m not knocking their beliefs, I’m from Texas myself so I understand their way of thinking though I may disagree with it. The reason I say that I respect the risks the shows are taking is that I can see in the comments we get in the videos of LGBTQ individuals that it pisses a lot of people off.
I guess at the end of the day it is the growing pains that we as a society have to go through as we evolve towards a more just and inclusive world. These shows, as silly as they may seem at times, are really changing attitudes and pushing for a more open-minded world. That’s a good thing. What do you think?
