Demi Rae Auditions For ‘American Idol’
At the start of her audition, 26-year-old Demi Rae showed the judges a storybook she made when she 9 years old in which she shares her dream of performing on American Idol.
She reveals that she got her love of music from her father, a dance instructor. However, Demi also shares that her dad was in and out of jail when he was growing up. Eventually, he turned his life around and was there for her more.
Demi performed “Mad at You” by Noah Cyrus for her audition. The judges were impressed by her voice, with Katy Perry asking if she’s ever “professionally pursued” singing.
Demi replied that she hadn’t, explaining that she gets “really insecure,” because she doesn’t “look like the other girls.” She added that she gets “anxiety” from social media.
“There’s probably not someone that looks like you because you’re supposed to be the one that looks like you,” Katy told Demi. “That influences all the girls that look like you that don’t feel like they look like anyone else.”
She joked that it sounded like a “tongue twister,” but Demi said she understood. Katy then added, “There’s a million girls watching the television going, ‘Oh my God, I’m just like her.’ And you’re gonna be that one.”
Demi was moved by Katy’s words, as well as praise from fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. She ended up making it through to Hollywood, with Katy hiding her golden ticket in her childhood book.
See Demi on American Idol this Sunday at 8/7c on ABC.
