If Simon Cowell fires you for being rude, you’ve got a real problem. Five years ago, X Factor New Zealand judge Natalia Kills literally killed her career on live television. She aimlessly accused contestant Joe Irvine of trying to be just like her husband Willy Moon. Moon who was also on the judging panel compared Irvine to fictional murderer Norman Bates.
Kills said that Irvine’s actions were “disgusting” and that she didn’t even want to critique his performance. The audience continuously booed both Kills and Moon while they continued to spew their hate. She accused Irvine of “having no identity.” Judge Melanie Blatt shut down Kills and Moon and told Irvine that he dresses better than Moon.
‘X Factor’ Producer Simon Cowell Called Natalia Kills’ Actions “Hateful”
Simon Cowell said that Kills’ actions were “hateful” and that she “sounded mad.” Cowell has been a longtime judge and producer of The X Factor UK. He also went on to say that neither of them apologized to Irvine, nor the public right away so their actions were very disrespectful. He did not understand why they were being so defensive and ruthless with their comments. Since Cowell himself has always been someone that does not shy away from stating his opinions, it’s ironic that even he thought Kills and Moon both went too far.
There Was An Outcry Of Support For Joe Irvine On Social Media
Social media erupted with people calling both Kills and Moon way too harsh and bullies. They even started a petition to have them both fired from the show. Both Kills and Moon were eventually fired from the show the next day.
Celebrities and fans alike expressed support for Irvine. Singer Lorde even sent Irvine a box of cupcakes and a note.
Singer Ellie Goulding also tweeted after the episode and referred to Kills and Moon as “mean.”
Where Is Natalia Kills Today?
For someone that accused Irvine of “having no identity,” Kills certainly should put her money where her mouth is. She has changed her stage name to Teddy Sinclair. This is the seventh time she has changed her name throughout her career. After her firing, she was also dropped from her record label. She started a band called Cruel Youth with Moon in 2016 but they did not have major success. She currently still puts out solo music but does not have the fanbase that she had before being fired from the show.
As for Irvine, he was eventually eliminated from the show but had the full support of the audience. He still continues to perform solo at small music venues around New Zealand. He also wrote a song about his time on the show and particularly how he felt abut Kills’ verbal abuse.
