Sharna Burgess recently reacted to criticism she’s heard over her win with radio host Bobby Bones on Season 27 of Dancing with the Stars — including a comment from the show’s current co-host Julianne Hough. Burgess admitted that it “does hurt a little bit.”

Sharna Burgess Reacts to Julianne Hough’s DWTS Comment

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live in August, former pro and current co-host Julianne Hough was asked to name a DWTS winner she “strongly disagreed” with. When fellow guest Mickey Guyton mentioned Bobby Bones, Hough agreed.

“I actually agree with you,” Hough said of Bones’ controversial win alongside professional partner Sharna Burgess in 2018. “And I think it’s because of the fan base. It’s all about fan base on that show. He was not the best dancer.”

Burgess recently addressed Hough’s comment, and the general backlash to Bones’ win during a recent appearance on the Between Us Moms podcast, saying, “It also sucks that of all the incredible seasons I had, I’m remembered as the win that no one wanted.”

“I think even Julianne was recently in an interview saying, ‘The win that should never have happened out of all 33 seasons was Bobby Bones,’” Burgess added. “It just sucks. It does hurt a little bit because I wish I could have left a good legacy, like, a beautiful legacy on Dancing With the Stars after my time. But it’s okay.”

Why Wasn’t Burgess Asked Back to the Show?

Burgess joined Dancing with the Stars as a pro in Season 16. Her last season was 30, when she competed with her real-life partner Brian Austin Green. She ended up taking time away from the ballroom after giving birth to her son Zane in 2022.

The dancer shared on the recent podcast that she wasn’t invited back to the show for Season 33 this year, and she believes it was because she criticized the casting of NFL player Adrian Peterson in Season 32. Peterson had been charged with child abuse in the past.

“This season, Maks [Chmerkovskiy] has shared very openly how he felt about Anna [Delvey] and criticized the show and that she was there,” Burgess said of what she believes is a double standard. “And he’s still on set and having a great relationship with everyone on Dancing With the Stars.”

However, Burgess said she “would love to have one more season there with everyone as a way to button it up,” adding, “After 14 years on the show, it doesn’t feel like it was a beautiful way for it to end after so much love and so much memory.”
