American music artist, Kehlani first hit screens on America’s Got Talent, joined by her instrumental band, PopLyfe. Despite the group’s success on the show, the leader singer faced the brutal life of homelessness after leaving the group. It was then that the former host of the talent show, Nick Cannon helped turn the young star into a worldwide name.
From sleeping homeless to becoming a huge music artist — How Nick Cannon helped Kehlani at her worst point
Kehlani has had no easy life, and with the help of former AGT host Nick Cannon, she’s a top contender in the music industry.
The music artist rose to fame on America’s Got Talent alongside her instrumental band, PopLyfe. During their first audition, Piers Morgan told the lead singer to leave the backing musicians and to go ahead on her own but was met with a negative response from the audience for the harsh comment.
Shortly after PopLyfe’s time on the show, receiving third place in the finals, Kehlani was told to leave the band and found herself sleeping rough. It was then that the host of the show at the time, Nick Cannon was keen to help the 16-year-old get back on her feet.
“My heart bled. I was like I gotta go find her. There’s a 16-year-old homeless and everyone in the town was like ‘she’s all tatted up now’ and I was like fu*k all that, I don’t care about the tats,” he told VladTV. “I just want to make sure she’s okay, found her, ended up having a conversation with her guardian at the time because her mom wasn’t doing too well.”
Cannon continued, claiming that he was willing to ‘take care of everything else’ if the young singer finished high school. As the comedian rightly put it, ‘the rest is history’.
Kehlani has made quite the name for herself over the years, producing music and winning award after award. Just this year, she was nominated for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist at the BET Awards.
