Maks Chmerkovskiy is looking back at when he and fellow former Dancing With The Stars pro Peta Murgatroyd were dating. Apparently, Chmerkovskiy almost broke up with Muragtroyd due to cold feet, but didn’t due to a substantial gift.
Maks Chmerkovskiy Chose to Stay With Peta Murgatroyd Because of a $8K Bag
Just like anyone else, Maks Chmerkovskiy and Peta Muragtroyd dealt with a number of things early on in their relationship. The pair looked back at these times on the recent episode of the Amy and T.J. podcast.
“He was the one to say, ‘I want to marry you. This is where we are going to get married.’ And then he dumps me, like, five months later or something,” Murgatroyd said.
Talking honestly, Chmerkovskiy admitted “That is what men do when they are in love. They run.” He also admitted it was overwhelming to see Muragtroyd’s things in his previously empty closet.
“I did the thing that all stupid men do. Cold feet. It was the dumbest breakup ever,” Chmerkovskiy said.
Apparently, around the same time, Murgatroyd had gifted Chmerkovskiy a $8,000 Louis Vuitton suitcase. Chmerkovskiy admits this gift was too much for him, while Muragtroyd admits the selfless gift was due to them being “so in love.”
The gift ultimately turned Chmerkovskiy to break things off with her. He then drove her to the airport in silence, then decided to break up with her as soon as she was “behind the rope” of the security line.
Muragtroyd admitted that she knew he was breaking up with her before this trip. Apparently on the way to the airport, Chmerkovskiy asked why she packed up all her things.
“Well, you’re breaking up with me, right? Why would I leave stuff at your house?’” Murgatroyd said in the moment. “He was just like, ‘You’re so black-and-white. Why would you take everything from the house?’ And I was like, ‘Wait, a second, do you still want me there partially?’ Like, it was so strange. That’s how I knew, ‘OK, this guy is just going through something. Let’s give it a second.'”
The Couple Eventually Rekindled, Got Married
Murgatroyd later in the podcast explained that she and Chmerkovskiy reconciled in 2014. The pair then went on to welcome their first son, Shai, in January 2017. They then wed in July 2017. Since 2017, the pair has expanded their family, welcoming sons Rio and Milan in June 2023 and July 2024 respectively.
For those who may not know, Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd met in 2009 on Broadway. They eventually began dating in 2012 when their paths crossed again on Dancing With The Stars. They got engaged in December 2015, Chmerkovskiy popped the question during an onstage performance.
