The X Factor has released never-before-seen footage of the judges creating One Direction, proving how instrumental Nicole Scherzinger was in making the boy band happen, even though Simon Cowell has taken credit for it.
‘The X Factor’ Reveals Nicole Scherzinger As The Creator of One Direction
The new video starts mid-deliberation, as Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, and guest judge Nicole Scherzinger consider which singers should move on in the Boys category. As they consider Niall Horan, Scherzinger says they should “do an imaginary boy band.”
When Harry Styles’ photo comes up, Scherzinger excitedly suggests that he should be added to a group with Horan. She says they would be “the cutest boy band ever.” As Louis Tomlinson is added, she says, “The little girls are gonna love them.”
“They’re just too talented to get rid of,” Scherzinger says, adding that they have “the right look and the right charisma on stage.” She calls the singers who have been added to the group “little stars.”
When Liam Payne comes up, Scherzinger and Walsh agree that he should be in the group, but Cowell isn’t sure. While Scherzinger suggests that he should be the group’s leader, Cowell says Payne “thinks he’s better than anyone else.”
When Walsh puts Zayn Malik in the group, Cowell praises the decision, announcing, “That is the category I want.” The judge ended up being One Direction’s mentor for Series 7 in the Groups category, and they signed with his label Syco Records after the show.

Fans Credit Scherzinger with Creating the Group
In 2013, Cowell told One Direction during a webcast that it was his idea to put them together, saying, “It was really weird… I just said, ‘Why don’t we put these guys into a group?’ It took about 10 minutes!”
However, this new footage from the show tells a different story, and fans are giving Scherzinger credit for how much she championed the idea of putting the five singers together. YouTube commenters are praising her, with one saying she has “an outstanding eye.”
The video also disproves Liam Payne’s recent claim that the group was created around him. He said on Logan Paul’s podcast that Cowell “started with my face, and then worked around the rest. I was the honorary member of One Direction. He told me that story himself at his house.”
As the video shows, Cowell actually didn’t even want Payne in the group, although he said he had a “standout audition” and wanted him to move on as a solo artist. And in fact, it was Niall Horan who was first added to the group, not Payne.
