The Voice returned to NBC on Monday, April 6 for a brand new section of the Battle of Champions competition. Various winners of the show returned to battle it out on the stage. Winning coach of the showdown earned an additional spot on their team in the Finals.
The first part of the episode completed the Knockout rounds with Team Adam members Jaali Boyd and Jared Shoemaker. They sang “Big Girls Don’t Cry (Personal)” by Fergie and “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde” by Travis Tritt, respectively.
After the performances, coaches commented on the performances, completely differing in what they thought. Clarkson said that Jared had the better song and performance ultimately, while Legend said that Jaali did a great job showing off her range with her song choice. After giving his comments, Levine “chose the person who I think did the best today,” Jared.
The following pair was Team Legend members KJ Willis and Grace Humphries, they sang “I’ll Make Love to You” by Boyz II Men and “I Don’t Want to Wait” by Paula Cole, respectively. Other coaches thought Grace did a great job conveying her message, but ultimately, KJ’s song choice was absolutely perfect. Legend chose KJ as the winner of the Knockout.
The final Knockout was between Jonah Mayor and Mikenley Brown. They sang “You Will Be My Heart” by Phil Collins, and “Pink Pony Club” by Chappell Roan, respectively. After the performance, Levine complimented Jonah’s character, and Mikenley’s overall vibe. Legend on the other hand commented that Jonah’s song choice wasn’t correct for a competition, while Mikenley’s vibe was worth it. Clarkson chose Mikenley as the winner of the Knockout.
All-Star Showdown
In th second half of the episode, the All-Star showdown was kicked off with commissioner CeeLo Green. After each performance, Green had the ability to choose the winner of the battles. Former winners include Maelyn Jarmon, Renzo, Jake Hoot, Girl Named Tom, Jordan Smith, and Javier Colon.
The first ever All-Star showdown was between Girl Named Tom (Team Kelly) and Renzo (Team Legend). Girl Named Tom first sang “Dust in The Wind” by Kansas, then Renzo sang “Dream On” by Aerosmith. The commissioner spoke on how Girl Named Tom implements the 1960’s three part harmony into everything, while Renzo has a very classic R&B voice. He ultimately chose Girl Named Tom as a the winner of the showdown.
The next All-Star showdown was Maelyn Jarmon (Team Legend) and Jordan Smith (Team Adam). They sang “Fields of Gold” by Sting and “Chandler” by Sia, respectively. CeeLo Green immediately commented on how special it was to have both of the singers return to the show, since they were equally as good. Green ultimately chose Maelyn Jarmon as the winner.
The final showdown was Javier Colon (Team Adam) against Jake Hoot (Team Kelly). They sang “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper and “Desperado” by The Eagles. Post performance, Green discussed Javier’s iconic performance, differing from the ‘cowboy who killed it’ Jake. Green gave the showdown to Jake, making Clarkson the winner of the showdown. She will now get an additional person in the finale.
