Some of the most popular talent competition shows are going head to head for the Critic’s Choice Real TV Awards this year. The Best Competition Series Talent/Variety category will declare the best show, choosing between talent favorites American Idol, The Masked Singer, World of Dance, and The Voice. Which one will come out on top?

Critic’s Choice Real TV Awards Pits Talent Shows Against Each Other in One Category

World of Dance was canceled in March 2021 after four seasons, but that didn’t prevent the show from receiving a nomination. The show did not air in 2021, but somehow made the cut-off to be nominated for this award. Typically, eligibility for awards depends on a certain window of time in which a show or film is released. It is not yet clear what rules the Critic’s Choice Real TV Awards followed when it comes to whether or not a show is eligible.

The Covid-19 pandemic did cause a lot of shows to be delayed, not air at all, or have to change up their entire format. They have still managed to appeal to viewers at home while still following safety protocols. The 93rd Academy Awards this year honored films from 2020 and early 2021. It’s likely that most award shows have adopted the same kind of rules. World of Dance aired its final episode on August 12, 2020, whereas other nominated shows like Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy premiered in February 2021.

Also nominated in this category for Best Competition Series Talent/Variety is Legendary on HBO Max. Eight houses compete in nine-ball challenges for a chance to win a $100,000 prize. Think RuPaul’s Drag Race meets Pose. Rapper Megan Thee Stallion serves as a judge on the show. This has added even more appeal to the exciting show because she has a huge fanbase.

Which Show Will Win?

Which show will take home the win? In a world where it seems like The Voice wins everything including the ratings battle against American Idol, the NBC show might dominate the category. American Idol and The Masked Singer definitely pose good threats to stealing the thunder away from The Voice.

The Masked Singer has gotten a bit predictable with most contestants spoiling their eliminations before they air on television. American Idol’s 2020 season was a bit of a hot mess after going virtual during the pandemic. The 2021 season definitely redeemed itself and was full of dramatic twists and turns. The Voice has consistently stayed jam-packed with Blake Shelton moments made for television which almost always guarantees award show wins.

The winners of the Critics Choice Real TV Awards will be announced in a press release on Monday, June 21. RuPaul’s Drag Race leads with five nominations.
