According to Billboard, Roberts worked with songwriters Emile Ghantous and Daniel Capellaro on the new track, which is a tribute to his home state of Mississippi. Songwriter Christian Stalnecker also contributed to the new single.
“Late nights on the road, but you’re always home / I need you to know / Oh, I’ll be missing you in Mississippi,” Roberts sings on the soulful ballad. “Are you missing me? Oh, are you missing me?”
When asked what the song means to him, Roberts told Billboard, “I wanted to paint a picture of what I miss and what I’ve come from and that what I do currently in Mississippi that gives me that ease and that peace of mind. And in the song, if you listen closely, you’ll hear how I feel.”
Roberts has a lot to miss in Mississippi, including his three daughters — the youngest of whom was born during his time on Idol. The singer said that the song is for “anyone who has moved away is missing home or missing a loved one that left and you think about them all the time.”

Is Roberts Releasing an Album?
Fans might be wondering when they can expect a full-length album from Jamal Roberts. However, it sounds like they’ll have to wait a while to hear one, since Roberts is apparently more focused on releasing singles right now.
“Like I told my label and producers and my manager, I don’t want to put out an album right now,” Roberts told Billboard. “Why don’t we just do what we’re doing? Keep people wanting more and let them support me 100% and I’m loving that. Even though ‘Mississippi’ is just coming out, trust me, we’ve got more stuff cooking and it’s going to be amazing. Stay tuned.”
Later this year, Roberts will be performing as a special guest on Brandy and Monica’s upcoming “The Boy Is Mine” tour, kicking off in October, with dates lined up around the United States.
