‘American Idol’ Goes Into Duets Night And It Was Incredible

I’m going to say that American Idol keeps getting better every week. Last night’s celebrity duets episode was maybe the best yet. There were some truly standout performances and even the people who didn’t make it are so good they will surely get signed by someone.

Amelia Hammer Harris

She sang Me, Myself, and I with Bebe Rexha. Amelia has a tremendous voice and comes from a great musical pedigree. The problem is that even though she’s an able singer, and able singer is not what they are looking for. She did not make it into the top 14.

Ron Bultongez

Ron did Someone To You with Banners and he was clearly really nervous. Who can blame the guy? What I know is that though Ron is a good singer I always felt like he wasn’t going to get into the top 14 and, unfortunately, he didn’t.

Caleb Lee Hutchinson

Caleb is THE country guy to beat in this competition. He sang Meant To Be With Bebe Rexha and it was as smooth and lovely of a country performance as you’ve ever seen. They had great chemistry together and he moved forward into the top 14.

Maddie Poppe

Maddie sang the song Bubbly with Colbie Caillat and it was nice but not as good as her performance on Sunday night. Still, it was a good performance and Maddie moved on to the top 14.

Garrett Jacobs

Garrett is the heartthrob of the show in that country boy next door kind of way. He sang Lucky also with Colbie Caillat and it was just a delight. He easily went into the top 14.

Marcio Donaldson

Damn, this guy can sing. He did the Marvin Gaye classic What’s Going On with Allen Stone and blew everyone away. Not only did he make it into the top 14, he will be a contender for the big prize.

Alyssa Raghu

Alyssa has been one of our favorites from the start and she did an admirable job of singing Coldplay’s Yellow with Banners. But, surprisingly, she didn’t make it through. Sad.

Jurnee

Jurnee and Lea Michele? How could you go wrong? You can’t. They sang Run To You, which Mara sang on Sunday, but this version made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. She made it into the top 14, of course.

Shannon O’Hara

Shannon is a good singer and she did a good job with Burning House with Cam. But she’s just not an American Idol, you know? She didn’t make it through.

Effie Pasero

OK, this one surprised me. Effie is one of the best vocalists on the show, without a doubt and she did a great job singing Diane with Cam. But for some reason she was not chosen. Maybe Cam is the kiss of death?

Mara Justine

Who doesn’t love Mara? She sang Fight Song with Rachel Platten and it was a great as usual. Mara is still over performing a bit but it’s still pleasant to hear. She made it through.

Ada Vox

Best performance of the night by far. She sang Defying Gravity from Wicked with Lea Michele and it would have been scientifically impossible for this to be anything less than the greatest thing ever. She of course made it through.
