Bill Gates Has Been Warning Us About Possibility of Coronavirus For Years — We Didn’t Listen
Reading Time: 3 minutes
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates may be one of the richest men in the world, but he is also one of the smartest. He has given countless TED Talks, speeches and made comments in the past about how a pandemic was on the horizon. Now more than ever, it seems like his words have never been more true as the world deals with the coronavirus outbreak.
Bill Gates Spoke About Future Pandemics In A 2015 Ted Talk
Gates used the example of Ebola during a 2015 TED Talk where he said: “We can have a virus where people feel well enough to get on a plane or go to a market.” This literally sounds just like coronavirus where millions of people across the world who traveled on planes were infected. We see that many people are also more than capable of going to the supermarket where they have been wiping the shelves clean of some of the most important necessities. He explained that there are so many factors that go into how a virus can spread.

One thing he made very clear in his talk is that outbreaks are a very serious issue and that “we should be concerned.” The key is to build “a really good response system” to help people receive information and updates on the status of these outbreaks. Along with technologies that can track where infected people are in the world. This can prevent things like panic-buying in the future.
Bill Gates Feared Widespread Flu-Like Outbreak In 2015
In a 2015 Vox video, Gates spoke about past spikes in influenza outbreaks and how he thinks there will be another one in the future. Again he spoke about Ebola and how it showed him that “we’re not ready for a serious epidemic.” He emphasized how important it is for the world to be prepared for such a widespread outbreak. He urged the military and people in the health field to start gathering resources and making plans and then maybe we can beat a future virus before it kills millions of people.

In the comments on each of his past videos speaking about viruses and outbreaks, people couldn’t help but point out the relevance and the similarities to our current worldwide situation. Some comments even suggested that Gates should be president due to his extensive knowledge of how to respond to these outbreaks and his intelligence.

Gates Recently Stepped Down From Microsoft
In a recent LinkedIn post, Gates announced he was stepping down from his seat on the Microsoft board “to dedicate more time to philanthropic priorities including global health and development, education, and my increasing engagement in tackling climate change.”
Many believe this is due in part by the spread of coronavirus and Gates’ dedication to finding a better response to how to deal with pandemics like these. Recently, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation pledged to donate $100 million to help fight coronavirus and they are also trying to find ways to provide people with coronavirus testing kits.
