Blake Shelton has been a coach on The Voice for 20 seasons, over ten years. So it might be surprising for fans to learn that he didn’t take the show very seriously at first.

In a new interview, Shelton revealed his honest thoughts about the show when he first started. He also shared the one thing — or rather, person — who convinced him it was worth doing.

Blake Shelton Thought ‘The Voice’ Was Ridiculous

Variety recently chatted with Shelton and fellow coaches Nick Jonas and John Legend, as well as Season 20 Mega Mentor Snoop Dogg. In the interview, Shelton revealed that he thought the show was “pretty ridiculous” when he first joined.

However, the presence of another coach convinced him it was worth putting up with the apparent silliness of the spinning chairs. That coach was Christina Aguilera, who appeared for six seasons, on and off.

“If Christina Aguilera is doing it, I’ll do it,” Blake said he decided. “The fact that we didn’t take it so serious when we started that’s where all the joking started from… I don’t know that show was ever meant to be as funny as it is.”

For a long time, one of the biggest sources of humor on The Voice was Shelton’s banter with former coach Adam Levine. When Levine left the show after 16 seasons, Shelton developed friendly rivalries with other coaches and kept the fun going.

Blake Spills a Secret About the Knockouts

The Knockout round is coming up soon on this season of The Voice, and Blake revealed something fans have probably suspected, but might not have known for sure about how the coaches decide their artists’ fates.

Shelton told Variety that he usually knows which of the two contestants in each Knockout will win and move on to the next round before they even perform. However, sometimes the other artist will really impress him, and he’ll change his mind.

This season, Snoop Dogg is serving as the Mega Mentor for the Knockout round. He’ll help all four coaches prepare their artists for the performances. This round kicks off on Monday, April 19, at 8/7c on NBC.
