Before her performance, Evelyn told the judges that she has dreamed of being on Broadway since she was a little girl, adding, “I want to go into mainstream at some point, and I want to be a superstar and just make people happy.”
For her audition, Evelyn performed a powerhouse rendition of “Defying Gravity,” showing off a voice beyond her years. The AGT audience was clearly impressed by the performance, as they cheered for her throughout the song, with many giving her a standing ovation.
Judge Sofia Vergara told Evelyn that she’s “perfect for what you want to do.” However, Howie Mandel said that musical theater is “not something I really respond to.” Mel B said Evelyn had “a great audition,” but added that it “wasn’t perfect.”
Simon Cowell admitted that “cannot bear” the song she performed, but told Evelyn that she has “a lot of guts.” He ultimately voted “yes” to sending her through, along with Vergara and Mel B. Mandel voted “no,” but Evelyn had enough to continue in the competition.
