Wicked Movie Moved Up to Thanksgiving 2024
On Tuesday, Variety reported that the first Wicked movie will now be released on November 27, 2024. This is the day before Thanksgiving and a month earlier than initially planned. The studio reportedly decided a Thanksgiving release was preferable to Christmas.
As of right now, the release date for the second movie in the series is still December 25, 2025. The musical adaption’s director Jon M. Chu shared the news of the date change on Twitter Tuesday.
“We are deep into production on ‘Wicked’ and everyday we get more and more excited to share with u the mischief we’ve been up to. So…We’ve decided to get it to you all a little earlier than planned,” Chu wrote. “A little Thanksgiving treat!”

The Adaptation Stars Ariana Grande
The Wicked movie adaptations will star former The Voice coach Ariana Grande as Glinda. She’ll be joined by Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. Back in October, Grande debuted blonde hair for the iconic role, which was originated on Broadway by Kristin Chenoweth.
In November, Grande teased that she was in the recording studio. Although fans thought she might recording a new album, the recording session was actually for Wicked. Last year, she admitted to fans that she hadn’t started her new album, as she was too busy.
In January, while filming the adaptations, Grande posted a video of herself singing “Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz. She seems to be in full Wicked mode, as her Instagram bio now reads, “currently somewhere over the rainbow.”
