Nicki Minaj to Receive Video Vanguard Award at This Year’s MTV VMAs

Rapper and former American Idol judge Nicki Minaj will receive this year’s Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. Minaj will also take the stage to perform at the event for the first time in four years.
Nicki Minaj to Receive Video Vanguard Award
The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award is a special Lifetime Achievement Award given out at the MTV VMAs each year. Past recipients include David Bowie, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, and Jennifer Lopez.
The award was last given out in 2019, to Missy Elliott. In 2020, Lady Gaga received the Tricon Award, and in 2021, the Foo Fighters won the Global Icon Award. This year, the Video Vanguard is returning, as MTV honors Nicki Minaj.
Minaj shared her excitement over the news on social media, writing, “You DO NOT !!!! I REPEAT!!!! You do NOTTTTTT want to miss my performance.” The Hollywood Reporter shares that this will be Minaj’s first performance at the VMAs since 2018.
“Nicki has broken barriers for women in hip-hop with her versatility and creative artistry,” said Paramount’s Bruce Gillmer in a statement. “She has shifted the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style and continuing to be unapologetically ‘Nicki.’”

When Do the 2022 MTV VMAs Air?
The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards will take place at New Jersey’s Prudential Center and air on MTV Sunday, August 28, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Voting is open to the public now. Minaj also received a nomination in the Best Hip-Hop category for “Do We Have a Problem?”
Minaj has received 17 VMA nominations in total, and she has won five. She’s also performed at the awards six times over the years. Other performers at this year’s event include Anitta, J Balvin, Marshmello x Khalid, and Panic! at the Disco. As the show gets closer, MTV will announce other performers.
Minaj has a new song called “Super Freaky Girl” set to be released this Friday, August 12. She also recently shared a trailer for her upcoming documentary series, titled Nicki.
