Last week, Netflix premiered the first two episodes of its new Star Search reboot. Unfortunately, the live talent show wasn’t exactly a hit in the ratings during its debut week on the streaming service.
Netflix Star Search Reboot Underperforms in Ratings
Netflix’s Star Search is a reboot of the classic talent show that discovered future celebrities such as Britney Spears, Beyoncé, and Christina Aguilera. The new show is hosted by Anthony Anderson, with Chrissy Teigen, Jelly Roll, and Sarah Michelle Geller sitting on the judging panel.
The show debuted two live episodes on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, featuring eight new acts in each episode. According to Deadline, the first two episodes received under 2.3 million views on Netflix, failing to make it into the platform’s global Top 10 for the week.
The show did, however, make it into the Top 10 for the U.S., coming in fifth place below the programs His & Hers, Skyscraper Live, Free Bert, and Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials. It also reached the Top 10 in South Africa, coming in at No. 9.
For the time being, it doesn’t look like Netflix will be a threat to the broadcast networks’ talent shows. We’ll have to see if the show picks up any momentum heading into the rest of the season.
Star Search is currently in its second week of competition, airing on Tuesday and Wednesday. The season will reportedly last five weeks in total. This week, the performers who made it through the first week of the competition are going up against a new crop of competitors.
The show airs live, meaning viewers are able to vote as they watch — either with their TV remote or on their phones. Like the judges, viewers are asked to give the competing acts anywhere from one to five stars to determine if they should move forward.
