On Wednesday night, The Masked Singer aired its Season 14 finale on FOX. During the show, American Idol Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips was revealed to be the celebrity under the Pugcasso mask. He finished in second place, behind winner Ashlee Simpson.
Phillip Phillips Unmasked on The Masked Singer
During Wednesday’s Season 14 finale of The Masked Singer, Galaxy Girl was named the winner and unmasked as singer Ashlee Simpson. Pugcasso finished the competition in second place, after singing “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper and “Sussudio” by Phil Collins.
When talking to Gold Derby about his experience under the mask, Phillips at first joked that the show “definitely got it wrong” by not choosing him as the winner. However, he went on to say that Simpson “deserves it,” adding, “I was just out there having a good time and experiencing something different.”
The singer shared that he had been asked to do the show in the past, but it “wasn’t the right time.” As he explained, “Then they asked again, and I didn’t really have anything going on. I thought it could be worth doing — help create some other opportunities.”
“I would check a little bit,” Phillip Phillips said of the guesses about his identity online. “Not too much — when I’m home, I try to be present with my kids and my wife. But I’d see some of the guesses, and they were pretty funny.”
When asked what he thought of panelist Jenny McCarthy correctly guessing it was him under the mask, Phillips joked, “I think she cheated. I don’t know. No, it was funny. And honestly, some of the funniest moments were after the performances when they’d ask me what I thought of their guesses. I’d say they were terrible — they don’t know anything about me.”
Phillips recently released a new song called “Homesick,” which he said is “about missing the people that make you who you are.” As he shared, “I love being a dad. Being away from my family is the hardest part of this job. After a couple days, I just want to go home — change diapers, practice baseball with my kid. That’s what the song is about.”
