The Voice will look a little bit different for Season 29, as the show takes on a new format known as Battle of the Champions. This season will only feature three coaches instead of four, with Kelly Clarkson making a return to the spinning red chair.
The Voice: Battle of the Champions to Feature Kelly Clarkson
Battle of the Champions is set to premiere in Spring 2026, with three veteran coaches — Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Adam Levine. According to NBC Insider, this season of the show will also feature a few format changes.
For instance, during the Blind Auditions, the show is introducing something called the Triple Turn Competition, in which the coaches compete to have the most three-chair turns on their team. The coach with the most will have an advantage in the Battle round.
This advantage is known as a Super Steal, allowing them to win out over another coach’s attempt to steal an artist from another team. This season will also feature the return of several artists from previous seasons, in a surprising twist.
The In-Season All-Star Competition will come into play during the Knockouts, as each coach will bring back two former artists from past seasons to compete in sing-offs. The coach with the most sing-off wins will be guaranteed to have a second Season 29 artist in the finale. These sing-offs will be judged by former coach CeeLo Green.

What Is the New Voting Format?
NBC Insider has also outlined a new voting format for Season 29. In the Semifinals and Finals, a block of The Voice superfans and past artists will comprise the in-studio audience, voting for their favorite artists. It’s not clear if voting will also be open to viewers at home.
On Tuesday, The Voice shared a video on Instagram showing the trio of coaches teasing the new competition. As Clarkson says after turning around in her chair, “This time, we’ve got some tricks up our sleeve. Y’all get ready.”
Before Season 29 hits our screens in the spring, Season 28 of the show will premiere this fall on NBC. The coaches include Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire, Snoop Dogg, and Niall Horan. Carson Daly will be back as the show’s host.
Premiere dates have yet to be announced for either upcoming season. Are you excited for Season 29’s format change? Are you happy to see Clarkson back on the show? Let us know in the comments below.
