‘Griselda’ Trailer Reveals Sofia Vergara as Relentless Drug Queenpin
Reading Time: 2 minutes
The first teaser of Sofia Vergara’s newest series, Griselda, is here, and she looks completely different. This is clearly her most ruthless character to date. The Colombian beauty will be starring in the limited Netflix series as the notorious drug trafficker Griselda Blanco, widely recognized as “Godmother.”
Netflix Releases Griselda Trailer, Unveils Unrecognizable Sofia Vergara
The 36-second trailer showed Vergara portraying the Cocaine Godmother, an infamous Colombian businesswoman. The Modern Family star was completely transformed into a violent-looking and powerful female with rough cuts on her face.
“You’ve thought a lot about me, haven’t you?” Vergara said in the trailer. “I’ve heard that you liked my product. We can make a lot of money together.”
The video pans, showing off illegal substances on screen. Then, a man snorting cocaine and bags of cash, showed up on screen. Later, a voice can be heard asking: “Who is the one in charge?”
Displaying a stern expression on her face, Vergara can be seen staring directly into the camera as ominous music plays in the background.
The bilingual crime series follows Blanco as she builds one of the most profitable drug cartels in history. Running a rigorous cocaine trade in New York and Miami during the ‘70s and ‘80s, Blanco was the first-ever woman criminal to become a billionaire.
However, Griselda will not only be focusing on the woman’s drug dealing profession. It will also tackle her role as a mother, following her journey as she parents her three sons.
The Limited Series Took Eight Years to Develop
Griselda is created by Eric Newman, Ingrid Escajeda, Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro, who serves as co-showrunner alongside Ingrid Escajeda. The Colombian actress and executive producer Luis Balaguer have been developing the project for eight years with Latin World Entertainment.
In addition to Vergara, the cast includes Alberto Guerra (Narcos: Mexico), Vanessa Ferlito (NCIS: New Orleans), Alberto Ammann (Narcos), Christian Tappan (The Great Heist), Diego Trujillo (Metastasis), Paulina Davila (Luis Miguel), Gabriel Sloyer (Narcos), Juliana Aidén Martinez (The Blacklist), Martin Rodriguez (Detrás de la Verdad) and José Zúñiga (American Crime Story: Versace).
Additional executive producers include Miro, Bernard and Narcos showrunners Newman and Baiz. Serving as co-executive producers are Philipp A. Barnett, Alfredo Septién, Turi Meyer, Gina Lucita Monreal, Brenna Kouf and Cassie Pappa.
In 2018, lifetime biopic Cocaine Godmother narrated the drug queenpin’s journey. Furthermore, Cocaine Cowboys, a 2006 documentary film, also featured Blanco’s life.
The six-episode series premieres on Netflix on Jan. 25, 2024.
