Sofia Vergara is Set to Star in the Netflix Limited Series ‘Griselda’

Sofia Vergara has been busy since the end of America’s Got Talent. This well known Modern Family actress has been working on her next acting project, a Netflix limited series about the notorious drug trafficker, Griselda Blanco.
The series is a retelling of the savvy and ambitious Colombian drug cartel creator. The business woman was notoriously successful because of her blend of charm and savagery. Blanco’s characteristics helped her navigate between family and business. She went on to have one of the most profitable drug cartels in history. Through the years, people nicknamed Blanco the Black Widow and the Cocaine Godmother.
“Griselda Blanco was a larger-than-life character whose ruthless but ingenious tactics allowed her to rule a billion dollar empire years before many of the most notorious male kingpins we know so much about,” said Vergara. “We are thrilled to have found the perfect partners in Eric, Andrés and Netflix to help us bring this story of her life to the screen.”
Griselda Gathers Crew from Netflix Original, Narcos
Vergara has been developing this series with film producer, Luis Balaguer, for eight years. Before bringing the idea to Netflix, they developed it through Balaguer’s company, Latin World Entertainment. Even though Griselda is not a spin-off of the Netflix original Narcos, there are some similar crew members. The director of Griselda is Andrés Baiz, a fellow native Colombian, like Vergara.
“Griselda Blanco has long been a passion project for Sofia and we are grateful that she and her partners at LatinWe have chosen us to help her tell that story,” said Eric Newman, executive producer of the limited series. “Sofia is a brilliant talent and her passion combined with a fantastic story from Doug and Ingrid, and the amazing Andrés Baiz at the directing helm, means we have a very exciting series to share with audiences.”
Griselda does not have a premiere date yet, but it will consist of six 50-minute episodes.
Vergara is not the only celebrity grabbing inspiration from the story of Griselda Blanco’s drug cartel. Jennifer Lopez is currently also developing a biopic about the cartel owner. Lopez’s biopic, The Godmother is in development with STX Films.
