Fans are criticizing David Foster after a clip has resurfaced in which he says his wife Katharine McPhee was “fat” during her time on American Idol Season 5. This isn’t the first time Foster has been criticized for his comments about McPhee’s weight.

David Foster Calls Katharine McPhee ‘Fat’ in Old Video

In a clip posted on social media, Foster and McPhee discuss how they met — when Foster was a guest mentor on McPhee’s season of American Idol. McPhee tells the audience that she was “a little chubby and cheerful contestant.”

A photo from that time can be seen on the screen behind them. Foster, who is sitting at the piano, says of his wife’s appearance, “Oh, yeah. You were fat.” McPhee responds, “I was a little chubby, okay?” Foster says that’s “true,” before McPhee adds, “I was just young.”

The comment has received backlash from fans, partly because McPhee has been open about her past struggles with an eating disorder. As one person commented on TikTok, “If he can say that in front of a crowd, imagine the insensitivity comments in private.”

TikTok user @jordycray, who posted the video earlier this year, recently offered an update. He shared a comment from McPhee calling Foster’s remarks “a bit” they do. When he suggested that those jokes could be harmful, she apparently blocked him.

Foster Faced Similar Criticism in the Past

This isn’t the first time Foster has faced backlash for commenting on McPhee’s weight. Back in 2021, the musician posted a photo of McPhee in a bikini not long after she gave birth to the couple’s son Rennie. He captioned the image, “what baby!”

Some fans took issue with the remark, which they viewed as playing into the pressure women often feel to get back to their pre-baby bodies after giving birth. Once again, people brought up McPhee’s past struggle with an eating disorder.

McPhee defended her husband in a later post, calling the backlash “so dumb” and adding, “I’m sorry but we are not sorry.” She said she lost weight without dieting and told people to “get a life.”
